A watchful monk for your budget
Nobody watches the budget on a Saturday. Nobody watches it at 2am, when a campaign quietly triples its spend. Nobody watches it the week you are on holiday and a feed breaks, or the day a winning ad fatigues and starts bleeding money.
That is not a discipline problem. You cannot stare at three ad platforms around the clock, and you should not have to. The damage that hurts most is rarely the slow decline you would catch at the next review. It is the sudden thing that happens while no one is looking and is only visible, as a number, a month later.
So something else should be watching. Quietly, in the background, without needing your attention until it has earned it.
That is Vigil. It is named for the monk who keeps the night watch while everyone else sleeps, which is exactly the job: to be awake to your spend when you are not. It flags overspend, anomalies and pacing drift, a campaign burning faster than its budget should allow, a metric lurching out of its normal range, spend pacing toward an overshoot, and it tells you while there is still time to act.
Here is a sample night on the watch:
Caught at 2am and on a Saturday — the two moments nobody is looking. You cap the runaway campaign and ease the pacing, and by Monday the watch reads clear:
What Vigil actually buys you:
- Time to act, not a post-mortem. You hear about the runaway while it is running, not in next month's report.
- Coverage you cannot give. Nights, weekends, holidays, three platforms at once — the hours a person can't stare at a dashboard.
- Signal, not noise. It stays quiet until something crosses out of its normal range, so an alert means something.
- Set once. It watches in the background and only interrupts you when it has earned the interruption.
The distinction that matters is timing. A report tells you what happened. An alert tells you what is happening, which is the only version you can still do something about. The best budget alert is not the most detailed one. It is the one that reaches you before the money is gone.
Set it once and it watches on the nights and weekends you cannot. The pillar is Find the money you're burning, and tomorrow turns the weekly picture into a habit in The Weekly Profit Digest.
